How I Met Your Mother

I can't tell you how many times I've started a blog, and then I stopped.  More times than I should admit, but here we go again.

I sit here watching How I Met Your Mother reruns on Hulu, thinking about what I'm doing in life, and what is going (or lack of going on,) and I realize that something is missing.  I need a focus, I need a goal(s), and I need a reason to keep moving.  I realized my life was becoming too routine when I had nothing even remotely exciting to document in my life on my Instagram.  It's been a running visual commentary on my life, and for 30 days I didn't have anything worth sharing - that's not good.  Luckily I was saved by Anna booking a weekend in Amelia Island.

So... focus, goals... I need those, and these goals below stand out as things that should be achievable.  They may not be moonshots, but for the next 6 months, there will be enough to handle in my daily life - I'll try to blog on that also.  We'll work on more momentous goals for 2019, because 2019 will (need to) be a year of change for me.

  • Exercise & Running.  I want to get back into shape and run the Ocala Half Marathon in January.  I've done this type of training before, there was a time when I set a goal to lose a substantial amount of weight; I met that goal and exceeded it.  Since then, I've been living off of that glory, and it's completely caught up to me.  I've gotten half that weight back and I don't like it, it's time to change it.
  • School.  I took a long hiatus from school, for a lot of reasons I'll get into later, and in January of this year, I finally returned to complete my undergrad in Marketing.  To say I was a challenging and lazy student my first lap through school is an understatement, but I'm working harder today and striving to do my best.  So far, so good - straight A's.  I'll take it (even though I'm 4 classes in.)  My goal is to get halfway complete by the end of 2018, with A's (fingers crossed.)
  • Reading.  I never was much of a reader, I'm not the fastest and I've struggled to find genres of books that maintain my interest.  Through school, I've been able to find some types of books that not only hold my interest, but I also thoroughly enjoy such as historical, autobiographies, biographies, and a few science fiction books.  I'm reading "The Warmth of Other Suns" right now, I'll give a full report when I'm done :)
  • This Blog.  I know, it's a silly goal, but to some extent, I enjoy writing.  My main issue with keeping a blog going is content, I get bogged down in life achieving the three goals above this one and I find I run out of things to say.  Essentially, I find myself only able to report on the three above.  I've learned a lot, and want a place to document what I've learned and what I think about what I've learned.
So, a quick list, but I think if I get too far and wide, I'll set myself up for failure.

Since every post needs a picture, here is one of my ugly mug, working on #1.

The Warmth of Other Suns

I don't do book reviews.  For school I've had to do book reports, this is also not that.  I'm finding that I want to jot down notes and thoughts on things that I've read that make me think or open up my mind on topics that change my mind or how I think about specific issues.   This is one of those times.

I've found myself struggling, throughout most of life, to recognize when events are actually happening on a timeline, and that certain events (no matter how unrelated the topics, happened at the same time;) Galileo and Newton having been alive at the same time (seems like Newton happened later in history,) the Brooklyn Bridge was built before the Tower Bridge in London, and that even though John Tyler was the 10th President of the United States (preceding Lincoln at 16th,) he has two living grandson's.

This last fact is crucial because it leads to the heart of why I'm writing; John Tyler, who was president from 1841-1845, who has two living grandsons, was …
